What I love about Classic French Toast with Berries

To me, nothing beats the cozy perfection of Classic French Toast with Berries and pyjamas on a Saturday morning. Especially, with a steaming cup of coffee. Our Saturdays are usually a delightfully relaxed vibe. Typically, Iโ€™m up around 9 a.m., while my husband would happily snooze past 10 if I didnโ€™t gently nudge him awake. Together, we chill in our laid-back morning routine, often enjoying a leisurely breakfast before noonโ€”ideally, a plate of golden French toast, a dish that seems made for lazy weekends. Best of all, itโ€™s quick and easy to whip up for just the two of us.

Lately, Iโ€™ve been absolutely obsessed with French toast. For toppings, I love sticking to timeless classics like fresh berries, a dollop of whipped cream, and a generous drizzle of real maple syrup. However, the possibilities are endlessโ€”you can mix and match toppings to suit any craving! Additionally, French toast is incredibly versatile when it comes to bread choices. Whether you prefer gluten-free, low-carb, or traditional bread, it works beautifully. As an added bonus, French toast reheats like a dream, making it a convenient grab-and-go option for busy weekdays.


What you will need to make Classic French Toast with Berries

Hereโ€™s a list of ingredients that you will need:

  • Bread – You can use whatever your favourite bread is whether itโ€™s gluten-free, low-carb, paleo, etc.
  • Eggs – You will be using a mix of whole eggs and egg yolks for the batter.
  • Dairy – Also in the batter is nut milk (or whole milk) and heavy cream for the most rich and delicious batter!
  • Maple syrup – A little goes into the batter and lots is saved for drizzling afterward!
  • Butter – Butter is the best fat for frying up the best French toast!
  • Berries – I love to do a mix of fresh blueberries, strawberries and blackberries for topping on my French toast. Pick your favourite combination of fresh berries and customize it how you like!
  • Whipped cream – Whipped cream is also always a must for topping! I usually make my own because itโ€™s so easy and then thereโ€™s no added fillers/weird ingredients. You can definitely buy it at the store for ease though!

Classic French Toast with Berries

Ingredients
  

  • butter for cooking
  • 6 organic free-range eggs
  • 2 organic free-range egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup cashew or macadamia nut milk (or regular milk)
  • 1 cup organic heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp real maple syrup
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 12 slices gluten-free (or regular) bread
  • 1 1/2 cups organic strawberries sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups organic blueberries
  • 1 1/2 cups organic blackberries
  • whipped cream for serving
  • real maple syrup for serving

Instructions
 

  • In a shallow bowl, add the eggs, milk, cream, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon and salt and whisk until completely combined.
  • Heat butter in a stainless steel pan over medium-high heat.
  • Add one slice of bread to the egg mixture and let soak for 10-15 seconds. Flip over and let the other side soak for an additional 10-15 seconds.
  • Transfer the bread to the hot pan and fry for 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden and crispy. Repeat with the rest of the slices of bread.
  • Add french toast to a plate, top with berries, whipped cream and maple syrup and enjoy!
